Family Therapist

Ben is a skilled Family Therapist who has many years of experience in public and independent settings. He has a MSc in Family & Systemic Psychotherapy (University of Bedfordshire, UK) and a Masters in Narrative Therapy & Community Work (University of Melbourne). He recently moved back to Perth, having lived in the UK for many years. He is a UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) registered Systemic/Family Psychotherapist and a member of the Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT).

Ben is an experienced facilitator/trainer and a faculty member of The Institute of Narrative Therapy (UK), and PartnershipProjectsUK, and has facilitated workshops and training in family therapy, couples therapy, systemic therapy, nonviolent resistance therapy and narrative therapy in the UK, Australia and internationally. He has a special interest in the LGBTQ+ community.

He works from an assumption that people are separate from problems. The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem. He seeks to help people shift entrenched and unhelpful conclusions about their relationships and identity. He is committed to harnessing important interests, values, relationships and experiences of those who consult him as a way to help people identify new and preferred stories, meanings and possibilities in their lives and relationships. As an adjunct to his work, Ben uses music, internet, film, investigative journalism and technology to engage children and young people in therapy.

Ben's areas of interest and expertise include supporting children, adolescents, individuals, couples and families to find ways to navigate and recover their lives from:

  • Family conflict
  • Traumatic experiences (including sexual, physical and emotional abuse)
  • Child/adolescent-to-parent aggression, violence and controlling behaviours
  • Low mood/depression
  • Self-injury
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Relationship and marriage difficulties
  • Parenting struggles
  • Pervasive worries, anxiety and panic
  • Grief & loss
  • Social anxiety
  • Struggles with gender identity and sexuality
  • Difficulties adjusting to life transitions

Ben also offers professional consultation/supervision to counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, community workers, social workers, GPs and other professionals who are working with people facing hardship in their lives.
