Clinical Psychologist

Julie has 25 years experience as a clinical psychologist across both public and private settings. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours in Psychology) in 1987 and Masters in Clinical Psychology in 1991, both at the University of Western Australia. Her expertise in psychological issues related to women’s and perinatal health developed at KEMH and she was the co-ordinator of a state-wide project “The Childbirth Stress & Depression Project” from 1996 -1998. This project developed and conducted education and training programs to health professionals and the community about these issues.

Her areas of interest include:

  • anxiety, stress and trauma
  • depression (including antenatal and postnatal)
  • work stress and career changes
  • life transitions, including adjustment to parenthood
  • grief and loss, including infertility and pregnancy loss
  • eating disorders
  • healthy lifestyle management
  • hypnosis preparation for labour

Julie utilises a wide range of therapy approaches depending on the presenting problems and the client’s needs. These approaches include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotion Focused Therapy, mindfulness, hypnotherapy and longer-term therapy. She also provides life coaching.

Julie is passionate about how to prevent the development of mental health problems and assist people to enjoy a greater quality of life and optimal emotional wellbeing rather than just the absence of symptoms.
